In memory of James Luque

I'd like to make a tribute to man who played a big role in my life the last few years, my father-in-law, James Luque. March 11, 1940 to April 21, 2013.  RIP  Obituary

James (Jimmy, Jaime, pops) was hard working man and no carpentry project was to big for him. He built houses from the ground up and was an expert of everythingin in-between. He was there whenever I needed him.
He loved his family very much, and used to fill up his digital photo card so often, taking pictures of them. I was always backing up his photos and clearing his memory card for him. I loved it when he would get this fire in his eyes and this contagious smirk when he got an idea or was excited. I loved watching football with him, especially the Arizona Cardinals, a team we both love.

My kids will miss their grandpa, my wife will miss her father, and I will miss one of the most stand-up men I have ever met.
One running story he told me….  When he was in Vietnam, one morning he decided to go for a run on the beach.  Without realizing it he ran past the safety zone and was startled when he heard a single gunshot as a bullet whistled near him. (Warningshot?)  He said he turned and ran back to the base as fast as he could.  After that day he made sure to not go outside the boundries when he ran on the beach.  He said Vietnam was beautiful, besides the war.

I love you, and miss you Mr. Luque.

I will not be running Zane Grey 50 Mile Endurance run this weekend as we will be burying my father-in-law.  I will be there next year!
I have decided to run the Whiskey Row Marathon in his honor on May 4th, 2013.  Marathon

Good luck to all the runners at Zane Grey. I will be there in spirit.

The Cedro Peak Ultra Marathon 45 · Saturday April 7, 2012 in Tijeras, New Mexico. The car’s temperature gauge read 37 degrees and it felt like it. I turned in my drop bag, checked into the race, and retreated back to the car with my buddies. We decided to wait until five minutes to the start of the race to head to the starting line. The race was set to start to at 6 a.m. There was an EZ UP with Christmas lights directly behind the starting line. The majority of the runners huddled together under it making last minute adjustments to their watches, headlamps, and gear. A Humbling Experience... Flagstaff 50 Mile Endurance Run

Course Info! Elevation  of race was between 7,000 and 9,000 feet. The course featured five significant climbs on Upper Oldham (1850+ ft), Lower Weatherford (1750+ ft), Friedlein Prairie Road (1100+ ft), Little Gnarly/Brookbank (1400+ ft), and Heart Trail (1900+ ft). To celebrate my year anniversary of ultra running I decidedto give the Flagstaff 50 Mile Endurance Run a shot.   I knew this would not be an easy run, but felt like I needed to challenge myself with a run that scared the hell out of me.   A few days removed from the event, I have mixed emotions, but know I have gained a ton of knowledge from this experience. This morning I got a text from my buddy that said, “Lots of fun W/good people over shadowed a sucky run….”   That text really hit the nail on what this weekend was about.   Yes we went up to Flagstaff for a race, but we also went to enjoy the fellowship we share as runners out on the trail. 5 minutes until the start of the race I walked to the startline.   Buf

Black Canyon Trail 100k, 2015!

This had to be the most epic Ultra-Marathon I have ever been involved in; the elite participant field was stacked, scenery to die for, not to mention the hype and excitement surrounding The Montrail Ultra Cup  .   I had no shot finishing in the top two, a guaranteed ticket to Western States.   The BC100k is a point to point race starting in Spring Valley, AZ and finishes near New River. I kept my race week nerves on ice until Thursday, packet pick up, and the screening of the Hal Koerner and Mike Wolfes fastest know time (fkt) on the John Muir Trail.   From the moment I woke up on Friday, I was bouncing off the walls.   I was trying hard to not be overly annoying to my wife, who was days away from her first ever half marathon.   The weekend was set. When we arrived to Mayer High school, in Spring Valley Arizona, Tim, Giles, Cristain, Brian and I sat in the car silent for a few minutes.   Finally the silence was broken and we begin our last minute preparations.
